ailmentscoughsIt can be very upsetting to hear your baby or toddler coughing, especially if it causes them discomfort and disturbs their sleep. The most common cause of a cough is a cold1. Did you know? The average baby catches between 8 and 10 colds before their second birthday2!
At the beginning of 2009 there has been plenty of front page news on over-the-counter cough syrups, such as Benylin children's chesty cough, Tixylix Chesty cough and Calpol - all of which had to be pulled off the shelves as they contained ingredients which could be dangerous for children under the age of two. The Food and Drink Administration in America originally released a warning following reports of deaths, convulsions and rapid heart rates among children who were given overdoses. Then the Commission on Human Medicines decided that cough syrups that contained any of the twelve dangerous ingredients had to be banned and other syrups had to be re-packaged and re-labelled. Months after all of this, buying a children’s cough syrup is still not as straight forward as it should be due to often wrongly indicated age suitability. Please always double check with a pharmacist or a shop assistant who can advice you on a product’s suitability according to your baby’s or toddler’s age.
